Ladies, if you want to get fit and get THAT bikini body, you need to lift heavy weights!
Some women are hesitant to go into the weights room. Lifting heavy isn’t going to make you “bulky” or “manly’er”.

Instead it will tone your body, burn more fat, give you more confidence and lift your self esteem! Many studies have shown that the more muscle a woman has, the more calories she will burn at rest. So basically muscles speed up your metabolism resulting in fat loss.

Some women also may be scared to go into the weights room because she might not know what she should be doing. Everyone has to start somewhere, so don’t be afraid to ask for some tips from a trainer, look online, or download a fitness app (Such as Pumpup) on your phone to follow until you feel confident enough with what your doing 🙂

Some key tips if your thinking about competing would be:

* Make sure you’re in the right head space to be on a strict diet and training plan and you’ve given yourself enough time to prepare without putting a lot of stress on yourself mentally and physically.

* Have a good support network – surround yourself with positive people who are going to support you and help you push through when times get tough. Its also very important to have a prep coach. They will be able to guide you through your prep by helping with diet and training, and they should also be there for you every step of the way. Determine whether your coach needs to be an in-person coach, or if you can work with an online coach. Whatever you decide, make sure you do your research and choose someone who has experience and knows what they are doing!

* Know that it is going to cost you! There are a lot of things you need to consider when competing (it definitely ended up being a big shock for me!) so here are a few things to keep in mind:
-Hiring a prep coach
-Contest fees

And lastly, have fun! 🙂

I grew up being very sporty and I competed at national level in athletics for 8 years. After leaving home and starting university I stopped exercising and became a bit of a party animal – resulting in a big weight gain. I decided I had to make a lifestyle change because I was not happy within myself, so I decided to join my local gym.

This was the best decision I could have made. Working out became a huge part of my life and soon became my passion. The way I felt both physically and mentally was amazing and once I started seeing results in my body I became even more motivated. Not long after, a personal trainer at my gym asked me if I had ever thought about competing. I had no idea what “competing” was but I was curious, so I went home that night and did a bit of research.

The women were absolutely stunning and made me think about how incredible it would be to have the confidence to stand up on a stage in a bikini like those women and be able to show off my hard earned physique.
From then it became my goal and I did everything I could to reach it.

I do take supplements and I do believe some are beneficial but only if you are following the right diet and training programme. If I am taking supplements such as fat burners, leading up to a competition or an event, I will always give my body a break from taking them for a good amount of time afterwards. There is no such thing as a “Magic pill” that is going to burn those pounds for you, but by taking supplements with the right diet and physical activity it is going to give you that extra help you reach your goals.

The supplements I use at the moment and that I believe are beneficial (for me) are Protein powder, BCAA’s, l-carnitine and glutamine. These help aid in recovery, building muscle and fat loss!

In the future I would love to compete again and work towards getting my Pro Card! I would also love to take my passion of fitness and turn it into a career. This is the industry I see myself in, and will be working hard to get there 🙂
